The Chase: Part 3.

Updated: Jul 12, 2020

Cyrene was on the verge of a nervous attack. She had woken up to a picture that she had seen in her dream. Something was wrong, really, really wrong.

Her heart was beating so fast she could feel it in her toes. Gathering her stuff up, she quickly made for the New York subway.

She had to get out of there. Fast.

Just as she started walking, a voice said behind her, 'Not so fast, sweetheart.'

Cyrene turned around so fast, it gave her vertigo. A young woman stood at the same place she was a few minutes ago. She was wearing a long, black coat, leather trousers, a black tee, and boots. With sunglasses and her hair tied up in a messy bun, she looked like a cheap, female version of James Bond.

'Yup, I am dressed like that. It's for a reason. Now come with me.', the lady said.

Cyrene was outraged. 'Excuse me.', she said. 'Come with you? I don't even know who you are!' 'You will come to know me soon enough', said the lady in black. 'Now, come along, will you?'

Cyrene protested 'I don't even-' 'Look, Cyrene. I know who you are. I know who's in the photo. I know what you saw. Now, for goodness sake, can you come along. Manhattan streets aren't very safe, you know.'

With that, she gripped Cyrene's hand and led her to the subways. Angry, Cyrene tugged at her hand. The lady had a grip like steel. She felt angry at being handled so roughly. 'For your information,', she said, savagely, 'I was heading to the subways anyway.' 'I'm not taking you to the subway. I 'm taking you somewhere... for now, let's just say better. Somewhere safe.'

Those words got to Cyrene. She never had a place to call home. Those words were warm and comforting. Much to her surprise, she stopped struggling.

The lady kept leading her to the subways. As they were descending the stairs, the lady turned to Cyrene. 'Cyrene, I need you to trust me. Just this once. I'm begging you. Trust me, I don't beg often. So consider yourself lucky.'

Cyrene was positively outraged. 'Trust you?', she demanded, 'I told you, I've never seen you.' The lady took off her shades. She had chocolatey brown eyes. She looked young, around 30-ish.

'Can you trust me, Cyrene? I promise you, I have a better place to take you to.', she pleaded. Surprisingly, Cyrene didn't resist. Something in her heart told her she could trust this woman.

'I trust you.', she said.

Cyrene saw the mysterious woman muttering something under her breath. She caught the words 'dark' and 'void'. Nervously, she asked the lady, 'Where are you taking me?'

'Oh, somewhere good... wait, I take that back. Somewhere dark.', said the lady, with a playful smile on her face.

They fell through and bottomless void.
