A very widely discussed topic, people have a lot of different opinions about whether politicians should. Currently, to be a politician especially in India, you don’t need to have any degrees or educational qualifications. But that might not be the proper way to go about it. Some benefits of them having basic education are: -
· They will be able to communicate better with the people in the country and be understood by everyone.
· Corruption amongst politicians will become much less as they will be able to conduct better research & develop better tolerance.
· When politicians are educated, they can think of better solutions & come up with solutions that are practical enough to implement.
Now coming to why it isn’t very necessary that politicians have basic education: -
· The main skill that you need in politics is how to talk so people will listen and for that you don’t need to be educated
· You need to have experience and this can be subdivided into two:
1. A person who has lived in India will know the day to day struggles of the people and that is not something you necessarily learn in school.
2. If they have worked in some companies prior they can use that knowledge to do good.
However, I believe that education for politicians should be compulsory, & should have different requirement standards. Why, you may ask? Well, that’s because:
1. A politician is going to have to read files & documents, which he/she cannot without basic education.
2. It is important for politicians to be able to analyse data & then take responsible decisions, which is for public welfare. This is practically impossible if they don’t have education.
3. When educated, there are chances that a developing politician is made aware of the dangers of corruption, which could result in the reduction of corruption rates.
4. When educated, they will also learn about real life experiences, which may develop their decision making skills.
5. When educated, they have a better understanding of what’s ‘good’ & what’s ‘bad’.
6. Education also teaches tolerance in religion, which means that there are less chances that politicians will make decisions favouring a certain religion.
To sum it up, I think that education for politicians is compulsory, with different standards for different positions, because of the fact that education is the backbone of any political career, as Jules Michelet once said, “What is the first part of politics? Education. The second? Education. The third? Education.”
